Italy's Monti warns of ongoing market turbulence (AP)

ROME ? Italy saw its borrowing rates fall for the second day running on Thursday but the country's new premier said his government had a lot more to do to convince nervous financial markets that it had a plan to deal with its debt mountain.

Mario Monti said he was encouraged by two days of bond auctions and that his government of technocrats, in office for just a month and a half following the resignation of Silvio Berlusconi's government, was working intensively on preparing a package of measures to get the Italian economy moving again, including efforts to boost competition and liberalize the labor market.

"We absolutely don't consider the market turbulence to be over," he said in a press conference just after the Bank of Italy reported that the country had tapped investors to the tune of around euro7 billion ($9.2 billion) in a range of auctions.

The most keenly-awaited result from Thursday's batch of auctions was the euro2.5 billion ($3.3 billion) sale of ten-year bonds at an average yield of 6.98 percent. That's lower than the 7.56 percent it had to pay at an equivalent auction last month, when investor concerns over the ability of the country to service its massive debts became particularly acute.

However, the country's borrowing rate on the key 10-year bond remains uncomfortably close to the 7 percent level widely considered to be unsustainable in the long run. Greece, Ireland and Portugal all had to request financial bailouts after their 10-year bond yields pushed above 7 percent. In the secondary markets, Italy's yield continues to hover around the 7 percent mark.

Markets had grown fearful over the past few months that Italy will find it difficult to pay off its massive debts, which stand at around euro1.9 trillion ($2.5 trillion). Next year alone, Italy has some euro330 billion ($431 billion) of debt to refinance.

Italy, which is the eurozone's third-largest economy, also sold euro2.54 billion ($3.3 billion) of 3 year bonds at an average interest rate of 5.62 percent, far lower than the 7.89 percent rate it had to pay last month. It also raised euro803 million ($1.05 billion) in the 7-year auction at a rate of 7.42 percent and euro1.18 billion ($1.54 billion) in nine-year bonds at a yield of 6.7 percent.

Thursday's results come a day after Italy raised euro10.7 billion ($14 billion) in a pair of auctions, again at sharply lower rates than those it was forced to pay just a month ago.

The sharp decline in Italy's borrowing costs over the past couple of days suggests that commercial banks from the 17 countries that use the euro may have diverted some money they tapped from emergency loans from the European Central Bank last week to buy the bonds of heavily indebted governments.

It may also suggest rising investor confidence in Italy's recent efforts to reduce its long-term debt through a variety of austerity measures.

Monti's technocratic government got parliamentary approval last week for more spending cuts and tax increases intended to save the country from financial disaster. One of the most controversial aspects of the austerity package is reform of Italy's bloated pension system.

Fire Destroys Church In Brussels

United States?(Illinois) - St. Mary's Church in Brussels is completely gutted after an electrical fire that started during Saturday night's Christmas Eve Mass. No one was injured in the fire. At about 6:30 p.m. the Brussels Fire Department responded to a call from parishioners who said they smelled smoke late in the service. The initial fire, which was sparked by a blown light bulb in the attic of the building, later rekindled itself.

"The main fire (that destroyed the building) didn't start until 9 p.m.," Bob Snyder, a trustee at St. Mary's, said.

Brussels Fire Department responded for the second time about 9:45 p.m. Six or seven other local departments, including Fieldon and Rosedale, were called to assist at around 10:30 p.m. Firefighters worked all night to save the building but because of the height of the church and a shortage of water, the fire could not be completely doused. As of 10 a.m. Sunday, the building was still smoldering.

Charles Burch, the Calhoun County state's attorney, said that the loss has deeply affected Brussels and the surrounding towns.

"It's a tremendous loss," he said. "The church was built in 1883 and it was the center of the community (and) an integral part of life in Brussels. Everyone was buried there and married there."

Parishioners of St. Mary's are hoping to rebuild using as much of the original structure as possible.

"We're wanting to save the exterior walls and rebuild from there," Burch said. "We'll try to salvage what we can salvage."

While the building itself is a total loss, many of the things inside were saved.

"We got most everything out," Burch said. "We got all of the priests' vestments out and most of the statues, and we were able to save almost everything that wasn't bolted down."

The stained glass windows, which were a part of the original construction of the church, were lost in the blaze. Another part of the original construction was the church's steeple. About 2:30 a.m. Sunday, the steeple fell into the building after the roof collapsed.

While the loss of the building is devastating, Burch is thankful that no one was killed or injured.

"It could have been ten times worse. We're resilient," Burch said.

"We will move on, we will prevail and the people will get (the church) put back together. We're accepting donations from anyone who wants to help St. Mary's."

Cops: Man who killed 6 relatives wore Santa outfit

The man believed to have killed six relatives and then himself on Christmas Day was dressed as Santa Claus, police said Monday.

The shooter "showed up shortly before the incident took place" in the Santa outfit and was a member of the family opening gifts in the apartment in this Dallas suburb, said Grapevine police spokesman Sgt. Robert Eberling.

Late Sunday evening, police intently searched a sport utility vehicle parked outside the apartment. The vehicle is registered to a man who listed his residence as a home two miles away in the neighboring suburb of Colleyville.

Thomas Ehrlich, who lives near the home in Colleyville, told the AP he heard from neighbors that police went to the house Sunday. He said it was his understanding that the man and women who once lived there were estranged.

Records show the couple had financial problems and that their home, most recently valued on the county tax rolls at $336,200, had been sold in 2010 at a foreclosure auction.

Eberling said the identity of the man and the victims would be released after autopsies are conducted and relatives were notified.

The dead ? four women and three men ? were found late Sunday morning in an apartment living room in Grapevine by police answering a voiceless 911 call.

Two pistols were recovered from the home, said Eberling, who called it a "gruesome crime scene" and the worst outburst of gun violence in the town's history.

No one was found alive by police arriving at the home, he said.

A community of about 46,000 people some 20 miles northwest of downtown Dallas, Grapevine is known for its wine-tasting salons and was recently proclaimed by the state Senate as the "Christmas Capital of Texas" for its abundance of annual holiday-season events.

"This is obviously a terrible tragedy," said Mayor William Tate. "The fact that it happened on Christmas makes it even more tragic."

The victims' ages were 15, 19, 22, 55, 56, 58 and 59, said Grapevine police Lt. Todd Dearing. The victims in their 50s were two couples.

Voiceless 911 call
Police dispatched at about 11:30 a.m. local time on Sunday found the bodies in the first-floor living room of a two-story unit in the Lincoln Vineyards apartments.

The 911 caller never spoke to police, and officers did not see the telephone when they arrived, officials said. Eberling said he believed police had to kick in the door to enter.

Many of the nearby apartments are vacant, and police said no neighbors reported hearing anything on a quiet Christmas morning when many people were not around.

Eberling said the victims appeared to have just opened Christmas presents when the shooting started, and there was no visible sign of forced entry or a struggle.

"By all appearances, they're all part of the same family," Eberling said. "It's a gruesome crime scene to say the least, with that many victims in that (small an) area suffering gunshot wounds."

The bodies remained in the apartment well past dark as investigators worked into the early hours of Monday morning processing the crime scene, police said.

Lincoln Vineyards is a middle-income complex near Colleyville Heritage High School, one of the area's most highly regarded schools.

Several neighbors said children frequently played in front of the apartment, and they regularly saw young adults leaving for work.

Vanessa Barerra said the killings were especially disturbing in light of Grapevine's reputation as a safe place to live.

"I did research and chose to live here because of the safety and the school district," she said. "I'm glad my kids weren't here. They're with their dad."

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Winter League suspends Torrealba

While playing in the Venezuelan winter league last week Rangers catcher Yorvit Torrealba attacked the home plate umpire following a strikeout, screaming in his face and then shoving his head.

You can see the incident for yourself in this video.

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said yesterday that the team was looking into the situation, but in the meantime the Venezuelan winter league has suspended Torrealba for 66 games, which amounts to the rest of this winter league season and all of next season.

Torrealba, who?s under contract with the Rangers for $3.25 million in 2012, could still face further discipline from MLB.

New Google Easter Eggs for the Holidays

Google gets into the holiday spirit with two new Easter eggs

Just in time for the holiday season, Google has introduced two new Easter eggs for users to enjoy. For one, simply type ?Let it snow? (without the quotes) into the search bar and you?ll be treated to a light flurry and quick frosting of your computer screen.

The screen frosts over in about 10 seconds or so. When this happens, you can use your mouse cursor to trace images onto the screen itself. (There?s also a ?defrost? button in case you want to quickly clean the page off.)

In their report on the story, CNET mentioned that this neat little holiday treat is powered by HTML5 technology.(1) A worthwhile sidenote for all the design engineers out there.

The other egg is displayed when you type the word ?Hanukkah? into the Google search bar. Doing this brings up a string of lights on the search results page:

In case you?re not familiar with the Google Easter egg series, the company has introduced several fun surprises of this ilk throughout the years. They?re not released publicly; rather, they?re found via the hundreds of millions of people who use the search engine machine daily.

Some of the more popular eggs include:

The barrel roll

If you?re not like me, and don?t get motion sickness just by spinning around once in your desk chair, type ?do a barrel roll? into the Google search bar and enjoy the ride:

Google Easter egg for the phrase ?do a barrel roll.?

Askew

Things are set off just a bit when you Google search the word ?askew? . . .

Google Easter egg for the word ?askew.?

Gravity

This one?s pretty fun. Enter ?Google gravity? into the Google search bar and click ?I?m feeling lucky.? The entire search pane, buttons, and logo will all fall down to the bottom of the page. They?re still usable, and you can also move them around by clicking, dragging, and releasing them with your cursor:

Google Easter egg for the word ?Google gravity.?

Chuck Norris

Google hopped on the Chuck Norris joke bandwagon with this amusing little egg. Type in the question, ?Where is Chuck Norris,? and click ?I?m feeling lucky.? You?ll be taken to NoChuckNorris.com, which displays the image below:

Google Easter egg for the question ?Where is Chuck Norris.?

Did you notice the extra option that lets you search ?Pages from Chuck?s Beard?? ?

Unborn son's struggle inspires Christian singer (AP)

PERRYSBURG, Ohio ? Told that his unborn son had only half a heart and little chance to survive, the lead singer of the Christian rock band Sanctus Real began pouring his fears and doubts into music.

The songs were meant to comfort his family while they searched for answers and sought to understand God's role during the months before and after the baby's birth that were filled with surgeries and life-threatening complications.

It didn't take long for him to realize that his words needed to be shared so that others struggling with life would know they're not alone.

What came out of the heartache was "Every Falling Tear," a solo album that's meant to touch and console during the hardest of times.

"People want to know that their pain has a purpose," said Matt Hammitt, one of the founding members of Sanctus Real, a band with two Grammy-nominated albums since 2008.

"That's the biggest part of sharing our story," he said. "That there is a purpose."

Hammitt and his wife, Sarah, knew something was wrong minutes after finding out during an ultrasound in April 2010 that their third child would be a boy, following two girls. They saw the sorrow on their doctor's face even before she spoke.

Doctors later confirmed the baby had a rare congenital heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome, which causes the left side of the heart to be severely underdeveloped. For five months, the couple contemplated all of the possible procedures and treatments while weighing the odds of what could go wrong.

Their baby would face multiple surgeries and an uncertain future at best.

They also didn't know how to deal with a flood of emotions ? the anger, the doubt, the feeling of being alone. Hammitt, 32, decided he needed to tell God how he was feeling, so he started writing songs about their journey.

"I began writing about all that I was learning about struggle and faith," he said.

Each song tells of a moment or a series of events leading to the baby's birth ? there's a father's fear of holding back his love for a son he may never know and a mother's hope of finding peace in the midst of despair.

"I wanted to write songs that would speak him someday about how much his father loved him no matter how long or short his life would be," Hammitt said, his voice trailing off.

The album released in September was his first solo work. On tour during the fall with the band, he included the song "All of Me" in their sets. It starts: "Afraid to love, something that could break. Could I move on if you were torn away?"

Hammitt was a high school sophomore when he and guitarist Chris Rohman and drummer Mark Graalman started the band 15 years ago. They've stayed together, playing in coffee shops, churches and now arenas.

Sanctus Real will be one of nearly a dozen Christian artists taking part in the Winter Jam tour that starts in January, with stops in 47 cities.

The song from "Every Falling Tear" that means the most to Hammitt is "Trust," a worship song that reminds people not to lose faith "even in the darkness, even in the questions, even when the hardest times of life are at hand."

The lyrics were born out of a time when Hammitt was feeling isolated and alone.

"Sometimes we need to be reminded of the truth," he said. "And for me, the truth is that I trust God."

Bowen Matthew Hammitt was born on Sept. 9, 2010. His first open heart surgery came four days later and the next night he went into cardiac arrest. A team of doctors and nurses spent an hour performing CPR until they were able to revive him and get him on life support.

Complications and a stroke kept him in the hospital in Ann Arbor, Mich., for just over two months.

While there, the couple played demos of the songs Hammitt had written "so Bowen could hear his dad's voice," his wife said. Night-shift nurses often turned up the music when most families would leave for the evening.

"They felt it was good for all the babies to be soothed," Sarah said. "We'd come back in the morning and it'd be really loud."

Hammitt recorded the songs for the album soon after the family brought Bowen home to suburban Toledo. His only unease was that they might be critiqued like any other work.

"Originally I just wanted them recorded for us at the hospital," he said. "I realized they're meant to comfort other people too."

So far, the response has been what he hoped for. They've even received notes from parents who've played the songs at their children's funerals.

Now, the Hammitts want to take their work a step further by starting the Whole Hearts Foundation, a source of financial, emotional and spiritual help for families with children suffering from congenital heart defects. They see the foundation becoming their life's work.

"It's amazing to see even beyond the album what's come out of this," Hammitt said. "We had a vision in the hospital, how can we help other families, let them know they're not alone."

Bowen, who turned 1 in September, faces one more surgery now slated for 2013 to repair his heart. Eventually, he'll likely need a new heart before he reaches middle age.

He's growing, but not as fast as doctors would like. Sarah watches him closely for any signs of heart failure. He only has a single ventricle pumping oxygen to his body and lungs so she looks to see if he sweats when he eats or if his skin turns blue or red.

When Matt brought him downstairs after a nap, a look of worry crossed her face when she saw that his hair was matted with sweat. But it turned out there was no cause for concern.

"We know at any moment things could change even though he's stable now," Sarah said. "It's ultimately God's will."

Letter: GOP health care policies damaging

The amount of misinformation many Republicans are allowed, or indeed encouraged, to believe is a condemnation of Republican leaders.

Many persist in the delusion that health care did not need reform. Budget cuts proposed by Republicans and the tea party do not address the real problems.

The much higher costs we pay for health care are a major drag on the U.S. economy and the cause of government deficits.

Private insurance companies, with their ceiling on benefits and frequent denial of claims, operated much more like ?death panels? than anything proposed in ?ObamaCare.?

Health insurance mandates are only necessary, as Newt Gingrich admitted, if, as Republicans insist, we retain for-profit insurance companies as part of the solution (despite their having been a major part of the problem).

If Medicare were extended to cover everyone, as some Democrats proposed, the problem of insurance mandates disappears.

Blaming Barney Frank for the failure of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac is ridiculous. From 2001 through 2006, when most of the damage was done, he did not have the power to block any legislation the Republican majority proposed.

Moreover, Republican policies have made the fundamental problem of money?s corrupting influence on politics worse.

Sony Ericsson's Ice Cream Sandwich update coming in early 2012 (Digital Trends)

Android Ice Cream Sandwich CuteSony Ericsson had already announced they?ll be bringing the latest version of Android to their 2011 range of Xperia phones, but hadn?t gone as far to say when this would happen. Today though, they?ve published a post on their official blog giving a basic schedule for the rollout.

The upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will be a split into two stages. Beginning in late March and continuing into early April, the Xperia Arc, the Xperia Neo V and the Xperia Ray will be the first devices to receive the new software. Then in late April the Xperia Arc, Xperia Play, Xperia Neo, Xperia Active and Live with Walkman phones will all be added to the list. They?ll also be joined by Sony Ericsson?s pint-sized Xperia Mini and Mini Pro devices too.

As with most software upgrades, not all phones will get the update at the same time, hence the slightly vague windows of release. Users will be alerted to the availability of Ice Cream Sandwich by a notification, and it?ll be delivered either over-the-air or via PC management software.

Last week the company put out an alpha build of Ice Cream Sandwich for developers to test, and included a video of Android 4.0 in action on their range-topping Xperia Arc S smartphone. It?s great to see a manufacturer embrace an Android software upgrade in this way, and it?s proof Google?s ?handset unity? program is working this time around.

Pocket Gamer's Top 10 Games of the Year 2011 - iPad Edition

This year, the iPad celebrated its second birthday, saw a sequel in the iPad 2, and watched as its burgeoning App Store exploded with thousands of downloads.

In the gaming space, we saw developers finally get to grips with the device. Super-sized iPhone apps are out, while better-suited genres that make use of the tablet's expanded real estate are in.

This year's best games on iPad, then, are adventure games that use the 10-inch screen to render intricate worlds for us to get lost in, strategy epics that let us see the entire battlefield in a single glance, and boardgames that mimic real-world toys.

Machinarium
By Amanita Design, buy on iPad

goty-2011-ipad-machinarium

Games don't come more beautiful than this. The hand-drawn backdrops, whirring automatons, and flickering lamplights of Machinarium might paint a grim dystopia, but they make for some of the most visually arresting scenes ever committed to pixels.

This Czech point-and-click affair is also memorable for its fab puzzle design. There's not a word of dialogue in the whole thing, so everything has to be communicated through visuals.

The game's cast of robots express their desires through body language, and hints are given subtly in the environment.

Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP
By Capybara Games, buy on iPad and iPhone

goty-2011-ipad-sworcery

Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP, a misspelled mouthful from some of Canada's most creative bods, refuses to be trapped in any one genre. It's a point-and-click adventure without an inventory, an RPG without fetch quests, and an action game where the fights are about rhythm instead of power.

Whatever the case, it's definitely a game about curiosity and exploration. Through evocative retrograde visuals and an operatic chiptune soundtrack, Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP invites you along for a ride into the world of the weird and the imaginative.

This is one iPad experience that we won't forget in a hurry.

SpaceChem Mobile
By Zachtronics Industries, buy on iPad

goty-2011-ipad-spacechem

SpaceChem Mobile isn't about chemistry. It might have a pop-up periodic table and invite you to craft puzzles around atoms and molecules. It might have you construct giant molecular factories that bond and fuse and snap apart compounds. But, it's not about chemistry.

No, this crushingly difficult puzzler is about computer programming. As you craft these chemical machines, telling nanoscopic robots how to interact with a handful of atoms, you're inadvertently learning all about loops and subroutines and even debugging.

And you just thought you were playing one of the most accomplished and addictive puzzle games on the App Store.

Assassin's Creed Recollection
By Ubisoft, buy on iPad

goty-2011-ipad-recollection

Assassin's Creed Recollection might not have slavishly recreated cities from the past, or grisly murders via a dagger to the jugular. But, it does share its namesake's effortless visual design, complex historical lore, and a penchant for quick thinking and subterfuge.

A sort of paradoxical turn-based real-time card game, Assassin's Creed Recollection is both about slapping down cards in step with your opponent, and waiting for the endless daily cycle to occur so you can pick another card.

This offers up a dastardly clever set of rules, allowing you to pull off some seriously sly, underhanded moves.

Aquaria
By Semi Secret Software, buy on iPad

goty-2011-ipad-aquaria

Splishy splashy adventure Aquaria takes the best ideas from Metroid and submerges them several fathoms below sea level.

It's got clever puzzles and bosses that require you to outsmart them rather than outgun them. It's got a huge maze to explore and items to collect. Only, it's a bit more soggy.

The game carefully balances the serene with the extreme. Mermaid girl Naija happily darts about the calm oceans around her submarine home, but if she's in trouble, she can belt out a tune and transform into a powerful energy form. Here, the game turns into an impromptu space shooter, as you use smart controls to shoot down aquatic monsters.

Sid Meier's Pirates!
By 2K Games, buy on iPad

goty-2011-ipad-pirates

Before Captain Sid Meier decided to create the last 4,000 years of of human history in a grand old strategy epic we call Civilization, his ambitions were a little more restrained. Way back when, he made Pirates, which was content to only simulate the swashbuckling life of a Caribbean buccaneer.

You get to live that life in this strategy game, which is all about becoming a fearsome pirate while hunting down your kidnapped family.

This means buying (or stealing) ships, getting into swordfights with rival seamen, doing business with island traders, and having a wee jig with the governor's daughter.

Hector: Ep2 HD - Senseless Acts of Justice
By Telltale, buy on iPad

goty-2011-ipad-hector

The iPad is the ultimate home for point-and-click adventures, but between the PC ports and prehistoric remakes, only one firm has had the guts to make an exclusive iOS adventure game worth yelling about: Straandlooper.

The Northern Irish studio's Hector trilogy is stuffed full of smut and naughty words, with jokes about all manner of bodily functions and fluids.

But, while it might be slightly puerile, the Hector series has a sharp wit and a satirical twist to back up the fart gag. Plus, the puzzles are inspired, with solutions that are both smart and frequently hilarious.

Ticket to Ride
By Days of Wonder, buy on iPad

Man proposes using Internet meme flashcards

Crazy Monkey Studio

Screenshot from the Meme Proposal video

By Athima Chansanchai

Internet memes aren't just for chuckles around the virtual water cooler?? they can also be vital accessories in a moment that lasts a lifetime: the marriage proposal.?Since everything that can be documented is documented, why not point cameras at this once intimate moment between two people, for others to have and to hold, for ever and always?

The "Meme Proposal" between two young people, Tim and Audrey, takes place just outside a restaurant in Kuala Lumpur on Nov. 30, shot and edited by professional film crew Crazy Monkey Studio. And reminiscent of "Love Actually" (nice call, Gizmodo!), young Tim stands outside a glass door, looking in at his girlfriend Audrey, who's sitting with her friends eating dinner.

And to the soundtrack of Christina Perri's "A Thousand Years" (which is itself on the soundtrack of the "Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1" soundtrack), Tim produces big flashcards that use memes to illustrate his point that though he may have been apprehensive about marriage for awhile, he is ready to take the plunge with his soulmate. (We like the old school cards, vs. using a tablet slideshow, by the way!) We won't spoil the surprise for you, but let's just say everyone grabs a Kleenex by the end:

On the Vimeo page, Crazy Monkey Studio gives a little background for what we just saw:?

For the first time, we got to shoot a proposal and it was real fun. It was a covert mission (ok la [sic] ... more like a paparazzi mission). We went to venue a day before to scout the place, discuss how to hide those cameras and look at how to be invisible.

On that day, we were all dressed in black. Talked using walkies. Used wine bottles, glasses, cutleries, vases and flowers as cover. We sat around the restaurant as guests but with our cameras on. And yes, we achieved total invisibility. Audrey walked into the restaurant, sat with her friends and never noticed us.

Not until the prime time when Tim revealed himself with meme place cards that was part of his proposal. That was when all the cameras (all four in total) started rolling.?

And, it turns out, Tim is some kind of big blogger type in Asia, judging from his blog and a post about attending the a recent blog awards event ? the Oscar equivalent for Asia-Pacific bloggers???with his "Shorty" (Audrey). She also blogs, and recounts all the details of the proposal on her blog.

I've been to a lot of weddings. I mean a lot. Several a year, for about 15 years now. And for the most part, they're first marriages. But after so many friends have already tied the knot, it's easy to forget that first blush (and rush) of hope for rest-of-your-life happiness that comes with the marriage proposal.

I hope you're never so jaded that a video like this doesn't pull at your heartstrings at least a little.

Romney sidesteps tax dispute; Gingrich dives in (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Mitt Romney refused to be pinned down Wednesday on how Congress should break an impasse that threatens to raise taxes for 160 million workers ? the latest pressing policy debate the Republican presidential hopeful has sidestepped. Rival Newt Gingrich, in contrast, castigated Congress for "an absurd dereliction of duty."

With less than two weeks before the Iowa caucuses, the two rivals exchanged ever sharper words over a barrage of negative ads coming from Romney's allies as they took a divergent approach on the payroll tax dispute deadlocking Washington.

"I'm not going to get into the back-and-forth on the congressional sausage-making process," Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, said in Keene, N.H., as the day began. "I hope they're able to sit down and work out a solution that works for the American people. My hope is that the solution includes extension of the payroll tax holiday."

But Romney left open the terms for an extension, which is the crux of the stalled debate in Washington. He suggested the extension should last more than two months and ideally a year, but called such details "deep in the weeds."

House Republicans rejected a bipartisan compromise in the Senate that would have kept the tax cuts going for two months, instead calling for talks seeking a one-year extension.

In Iowa, Gingrich called a two-month extension "insufficient" and scolded the Democratic-controlled Senate, Majority Leader Harry Reid and President Barack Obama's administration for "lurching from failure to failure" and marveled: "They can't figure out how to pass a one-year extension, so the Senate leaves town?"

"It's game-playing," added the former House speaker, who stopped short of criticizing House Republicans and their leader Ohio Rep. John Boehner. Gingrich also did not criticize Sen. Mitch McConnell, the Republican Senate leader from Kentucky who signed off on the short-term extension.

The different postures over the payroll tax extension played out against a backdrop of intensifying rancor - and a dispute over negative advertising - between Romney and Gingrich with the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses drawing close.

Romney argued that Gingrich wasn't strong enough to withstand the criticism coming his way, especially from $2.8 million in ads by the pro-Romney group Restore Our Future. The group is going after Gingrich relentlessly in Iowa and exacting a price in the former speaker's standing in polls.

"I'm sure I could go out and say, `Please, don't do anything negative,'" Romney said on Fox News. "But this is politics. And if you can't stand the heat in this little kitchen, wait until Obama's Hell's Kitchen turns up the heat."

Gingrich shot back from Manchester, N.H.: "If he wants to test the heat, I'll meet him anywhere in Iowa next week." He went on: "If he wants to try out the kitchen, I'll be glad to debate him anywhere. We'll bring his ads and he can defend them."

Gingrich tried to show he was aiming for a higher road. He started collecting petition signatures from like-minded people who don't want to see the Republican candidates ripping into each other.

"Attacking fellow Republicans only helps one person: Barack Obama," the petition states.

Gingrich has complained that the Restore Our Future ads, most painting him as an ethically challenged Washington power broker, are untrue. But he declined to say during a news conference in Des Moines on Wednesday what specifically is inaccurate about the ads, instead citing independent reviews that have questioned their validity.

"It would be nice if Governor Romney was either honest about his former staff and his supporters running negative ads, and either disown them - ask that they take them off the air - or admit this is his campaign," Gingrich said.

Gingrich made similar remarks later in northern Virginia, a state where he must file 10,000 voters' signatures by Thursday to qualify for the March 6 primary. Romney and other candidates took care of that task long ago. Gingrich told a crowd in Arlington he had more than enough names, but his staff signed up everyone in the room all the same.

For his part, Romney largely took a pass on the payroll tax matter despite casting himself as an outsider with the business expertise necessary to fix Washington and the economy. He has spent much of the year declining to weigh in on the hot-button fiscal issues Congress has wrestled over.

He stayed out of the summertime fight over raising the federal debt ceiling, urging cooperation but stopping short of endorsing the House GOP's one-year extension or the Senate's two-month extension. He eventually opposed the deal.

In the spring, he was initially reluctant to embrace Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan's budget proposal, which would have essentially transformed Medicare into a voucher system. Since then, he's endorsed parts of it.

And on Wednesday, Romney told NBC's Chuck Todd that if he becomes the nominee, he will not release his tax returns to the public.

Gingrich, conversely, hasn't shied away from injecting himself into the latest debates on Capitol Hill, eager to show that he has the leadership qualifications necessary to run Washington and the country - even when it was politically perilous.

He supported raising the debt ceiling, anathema to many conservatives, and castigated the Medicare portion of the Ryan plan, popular with the GOP's right flank, as "right-wing social engineering," a phrase he later apologized for using. On the latest issue, Gingrich favors a one-year extension of the payroll tax cut.

He has argued that he's a proven national leader for having battled Democratic President Bill Clinton in the 1990s. He usually doesn't mention that as House speaker back then, he bore much of the blame for the federal government twice shutting down when he could not agree on a budget with the Clinton White House.

On Wednesday, in Iowa, he tried to use the latest stalemate to his advantage, saying: "This is an example of why people are sick of Washington and sick of politics."

Meanwhile, in eastern Iowa, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, vying for the conservative crown in Iowa, blasted the extension as "a very bad proposition" that's too costly.

Gingrich is trying to end his slide in Iowa, where the attacks have taken hold in the past two weeks, with a show of force from establishment Republican leaders in early voting states endorsing his candidacy. He also was dispatching former Oklahoma Rep. J.C. Watts to Iowa to meet privately with GOP leaders and the media in an attempt to stabilize the campaign.

The spat between Romney and Gingrich over third-party ads has dominated the GOP campaign in recent days and highlighted the role of super PACs, independent groups that may accept unlimited donations but are not supposed to directly coordinate with candidates.

Such groups have sprung up to support every serious Republican candidate following a Supreme Court decision last year that said individuals, unions and corporations can donate unlimited sums of money to outfits advocating the election or defeat of candidates.

Two pro-Gingrich groups have started raising money and Gingrich's longtime aide Rick Tyler just signed on with one of them. But Romney's supporters have had a head start in raising money and are slated to spend $3 million this month in Iowa alone, most on anti-Gingrich ads.

Gingrich, who trails Romney badly in fundraising, said he would disavow any group that runs negative ads on his behalf.

Signaling a possible softening of ads just before the holiday, Gingrich this week began showing a Christmas greeting commercial while Texas Gov. Rick Perry launched one featuring his wife, Anita.

But the spirit hadn't hit with a group supporting Perry, which launched an ad criticizing Romney for his past support of abortion rights and Gingrich for ethics violations while in Congress.

This past Friday, I mentioned that I was trying to get the new Twitter web client. My colleague and noted internet deviant Mat Honan graciously offered to pop in the workaround for me if I'd send him my password. I was in a rush to get to a meeting, so unaccountably, I agreed. Big mistake. More »

Oscar academy plans outdoor theater in Hollywood (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? The overseers of the Academy Awards are building an outdoor theater and event space on a piece of land in Hollywood that had been intended for a film museum.

The Los Angeles Times reported Sunday that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences plans to open the 17,000-square-foot amphitheater next May as a venue to show classic films.

The academy bought the land in 2005 with plans to build a world-class film museum there. Planners abandoned that idea after the economy went sour, making it impossible to raise the funds needed to build a whole new facility.

In October, the academy announced plans to lease a former May Co. department store now owned by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and put the movie museum there.

Russian team trying to top K2 ? in winter (AP)

ISLAMABAD ? Reaching the summit of K2 in summer is one of mountaineering's most deadly and difficult challenges.

Now, a team of Russians is attempting what no other has yet achieved ? scaling the world's second highest peak in winter.

The 15 climbers will endure temperatures plunging more than 50 below zero and winds of up to 70 kilometers an hour (40 miles per hour) as they inch up the stunning giant pyramid that straddles Pakistan and China. The assault is expected to take 2 1/2 months.

"This is only possible for a Russian team," said Victor Kozlov, the affable leader of the expedition, whose members put up a new route on K2 in 2007. "God willing, we can make it," he said this week in the Pakistani capital, ahead of his journey to the Karakoram range in the far north of the country.

Winter ascents of the world's 14 highest mountains are some of most prized achievements left in climbing.

The "eight-thousanders," as they're known since they all top 8,000 meters (5 miles), were all conquered in summertime long ago. Amid a crowded field where each year hundreds pay around $80,000 to be guided up Everest, winter ascents can help a climber stand out and get his or her name in the history books.

Winter climbers have been summitting the 14 one by one the past decades ? starting with Everest ? but peaks of the Karakorum remained unconquered. The range is further north than the Himalayas, where Everest is located, and thus sees harsher winters. K2 is the northernmost peak of the lot.

Teams attempted winter ascents in the Karakorum 16 times in recent years. The first success came this year, when a three-member team including American Cory Richards summitted Gasherbrum II. That left only four peaks, three of them in the Karakorum and one nearby in the Himalayas.

"If they make it up K2 in winter, it will be huge," said Billi Bierling, a mountaineering journalist with three "eight thousanders" to her name, including Everest.

Elite mountaineers thrive on first ascents, new routes on established peaks and climbing in the "purest style" possible. That typically means no porter assistance high up on the slopes, no oxygen bottles or no reliance on fixed ropes left by other parties.

The Russians, who start their ascent around Christmas, are not using oxygen and will have porters at base camp only. Their gear and food ? including three freshly slaughtered yaks and, according to Kozlov, a little vodka ? is being flown in by Pakistani army helicopters charging more than $7,000 an hour.

Winter climbing means less daylight and temperatures around twice as cold as summer, making frostbite more of a danger. Living conditions at base camp are more miserable, winds are more vicious, there is more snow, greater avalanche risk and climbers need more food and equipment to stay alive.

The one plus: "The mountains are less crowded," said Bierling.

By the mid 1960s, all of the world's tallest 14 mountains had seen summer ascents.

A Polish team was first up an "eight-thousander" in winter, topping out on Everest in February 1980. The triumph set the stage for a decade of other successful expeditions, mostly by a group of Polish climbers nicknamed "The Ice Warriors."

The Russians intend to follow the "Cesen" route up K2 before venturing to the 8,611-meter summit from a face that has never been climbed, hoping it will allow them to avoid the worst of the wind. They plan to fix ropes and establish camps up the mountain. They will then wait for a window of clear weather, at most a few days sometime in February or early March, and make a summit dash.

K2 is renowned for terrible, unpredictable weather and steeper slopes than Everest. In the summer of 2008, 11 climbers died in an avalanche, the deadliest incident on a peak that has the second-highest fatality rate among the "eight-thousanders." More than 300 have reached the top, but at least 80 have died trying.

Andrzej Zawada, the Polish climber who made Everest's first winter ascent, tried K2 in 1987.

In a written account, he said that from the end of December there was so much snow at base camp they had to dig tunnels to get into their tents. In 80 days on the mountain, they had just 10 days of good weather. They retreated after reaching a high point of 7,300 meters, frostbitten, their tents and ropes ripped off the mountain in the wind.

"We did everything that was humanly possible in those inhospitable conditions," he wrote. "We were simply powerless in the face of such dangerous, formidable and life threatening elements which people have to confront in the highest mountains."

Ashraf Aman, the first Pakistani climber to summit K2, said he thought the Russians stood a chance.

"They are a strong team, and experienced, but it depends on the weather," he said.

He urged them to be fearless: "If you face death in the face, it will run away like a dog."

There are two other expeditions elsewhere in the Karakorams this winter.

Pakistan has long welcomed foreign mountaineering expeditions, which bring cash and jobs into one of the country's poorest regions. While the northern areas where the Karakorum range is situated are some of the safest in Pakistan, largely untouched by militancy, the spike in Islamist terrorism in the country over the last five years has led to a sharp drop in arrivals, said Naiknam Karim, from Adventure Tours Pakistan, which is organizing the Russian push.

"The biggest hurdle is the law and order situation and the perception outside the country," he said. "Sometimes the climbers want to come, but their families don't allow it."

House GOP unveils $1 trillion spending bill

WASHINGTON (AP) ? House Republicans have unveiled a massive $1 trillion-plus yearend spending package despite a plea from the White House for additional talks over a handful of provisions opposed by President Barack Obama.

The measure curbs agency budgets but drops many policy provisions sought by GOP conservatives.

But it contains language to roll back Obama administration policies that had loosened restrictions on the rights of Cuban immigrants to send money to relatives in Cuba or travel back to the island to visit.

The measure had been held up by Senate Democrats seeking leverage in talks on extending payroll tax cuts and unemployment insurance ? two pillars of Obama's jobs agenda.

A vote could come as early as Friday to avoid a government shutdown.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 rolls through the FCC packing Verizon-friendly LTE

Samsung's Galaxy Tab 7.7 is certainly no stranger to the good people at the FCC, as both WiFi and HSPA+ versions have already run the Commission's gauntlet of radiation tests. The third time's the charm for Verizon customers, however, because a new model dubbed SCH-i815 has made its way to the FCC bearing CDMA and LTE radios built to surf Big Red's network. So, it looks like the Galaxy Tab 7.7 will be making its way to American store shelves sometime soon. The question is, did Sammy have to beef up the Tab's profile to cram in the LTE gear like its Nexus cousin?
