Apple tells us that the iPhone 5 offers "even longer battery life" than any of its predecessors, but what does that really mean? Can the new smartphone keep up ?with ?? or beat ? the competition?

Laptop Mag's Mark Spoonauer conducted some thorough tests while reviewing the iPhone 5, just as he does when checking out other smartphones, to find out.

"Our test goes out and surfs 50 of the most popular websites in succession every 60 seconds," he told me,?in describing the testing procedures Laptop Mag sets up. "It's meant to mimic how people use their phones.?Every minute or so, you might take it out of your pocket and use it."

Apple claims that the iPhone 5 has enough battery power to offer "up to 8 hours of browsing on a cellular connection, up to 8 hours of talk time, and up to 10 hours of video playback time." In?Spoonauer's tests, the device "lasted 7 hours and 13 minutes."

To put that into perspective, consider that the Samsung Galaxy S III, a key?competitor, lasted for six hours and 55 minutes in Laptop Mag's tests. The iPhone 4S lasted five hours and 54 minutes, the HTC One X lasted 5 hours and 59 minutes, the Samsung?Galaxy Nexus lasted 3 hours and 40 minutes. The current champ, when it comes to battery life, is?the Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx, with a battery life of 8 hours and 25 minutes, according to Laptop Mag's tests.

"It simply has a bigger capacity battery," says Spoonauer, referring to the Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx. "At some point physics has to take over." There's only so much that Apple's clever software tweaks can do to boost the life of a rather small battery. Of course a device such as the?Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx stands a chance of outrunning the iPhone 5 thanks to sheer capacity. "It's amazing that it lasts as long as it does, given how small the battery is in comparison to the competition," Spoonauer points out.

"For the [battery] size, I think that the iPhone 5 offers fairly good battery life," he concludes before cautioning that he has seen some complaints about battery life?on Apple-centric forums.?

We put a lot of trust in Spoonauer's quantitative tests, though, and until the anecdotal evidence of poor battery performance is overwhelming, we'll maintain our faith in his assessment. This little gadget seems to last "longer on a charge than most 4G LTE phones."

Canada needs to boost its manufacturing sector to make up for jobs that will be lost in oil refining, federal NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair said Saturday during the Alberta NDP?s annual convention at Crowne Plaza Chateau Lacombe.

Mulcair expressed concerns over the loss of potential manufacturing jobs in the proposed Northern Gateway and Keystone XL pipeline deals.

He said the Keystone pipeline, which would ship raw bitumen to the U.S. gulf coast, would represent the export of 40,000 well-paying jobs in upgrading, refining and transformation.

?We should be looking at our own energy security in Canada,? Mulcair said.

?We should be looking to create jobs in Canada before we ship it out in its raw form at the lowest price.?

Mulcair said the loss of manufacturing jobs is not only happening in Alberta?s oil industry, but also on the Atlantic coast where fish are being fast-frozen and shipped to China for processing.

?There does seem to be a consistent pattern of behaviour in Canada where we let foreign countries, in this case, actually take over our resource,? he said.

Mulcair said he has ?grave? environmental concerns with the pipelines, citing the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska as a warning of the devastation a spill could cause.

He also knocked the federal Tories, saying they don?t enforce Canada?s environmental laws and change laws to correspond to industry practices.

?What we?ve been talking about since the beginning is the need to enforce existing federal environmental laws. Whether it?s the Fisheries Act, Species at Risk Act, or the navigable waters act, those laws are not being enforced right now,? Mulcair said.

Mulcair and Alberta NDP Leader Brian Mason both stressed that Alberta does need pipelines, but that we shouldn?t be shipping unprocessed bitumen to foreign markets.

Mason said Enbridge?s Northern Gateway pipeline to the west coast being ?entirely owned? by Chinese state oil companies is not in Canada?s best interest. The Northern Gateway is a hot-button issue in Edmonton, where federal hearings on the pipeline are underway.

Mulcair said the NDP wants fair and reciprocal trade deals that take into account the human rights, workers? rights, and environmental records of Canada?s trading partners.

?There?s really little difference between a state-controlled company and the state itself, and I think that?s something that should be on the table,? he said.

Mulcair also touched on health care Saturday, saying the Conservatives are leading the country into a two-tiered system to the detriment of poor Canadians.

He?s confident the NDP will win more seats in the prairie provinces in the next federal election.

?We understand that between the Ontario border and British Columbia, we have only three seats. That will change in the next election,? he said.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Alberta NDP party.

Global growth fears creep into financial markets

LONDON (AP) ? Global financial markets drifted lower Monday as investors' growing concerns about the state of the global economy offset any remaining optimism over central banks' stimulus efforts.

Stocks have risen in recent weeks as the U.S. Federal Reserve and monetary authorities in other major economies announced measures to support economic activity. The European Central Bank unveiled a new plan to restore investor confidence in the government finances of the 17-country eurozone.

The latest indicators, however, suggest the global economy is still slowing down and will take some time to recover.

On Monday, Germany's Ifo index of business confidence fell for a fifth consecutive month, evidence that even the continent's largest and so far strongest economy is suffering headwinds.

"The reality of weak growth and underlying structural tensions is coming back to haunt markets," said Mitul Kotecha, strategist at Credit Agricole CIB.

By late morning in Europe, the FTSE 100 index of leading British companies fell 0.6 percent to 5,818.09 and France's CAC 40 dropped 1.3 percent to 3,484.89. Germany's DAX shed 0.7 percent to 7397.37.

Wall Street was poised to fall on the open ? Dow futures were down 0.4 percent to 13,450 while the broader S&P 500 futures dropped 0.5 percent to 1,444.90. Asian markets closed lower.

Looking ahead, Europe's debt crisis will remain a point of focus for investors. Spain is due to unveil a new series of cost-cutting measures and structural reforms that could pave the way for a demand for financial aid from its fellow eurozone countries.

Spanish stock and bond markets have been volatile in recent days as hopes that Madrid will apply for the aid alternated with concern that it was delaying the move.

On Friday, the country will also release a final estimate of the financing needs of its weakest banks. The figures will help the government determine how much of an existing ?100 billion ($130 billion) eurozone rescue loan ? earmarked for the banks ? it should use.

Earlier, Tokyo's Nikkei 225 index dropped 0.4 percent to close at 9,069.29 while Seoul's Kospi index was roughly unchanged at 2,003.44.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.2 percent to 20,694.70 while Sydney's ASX S&P 200 fell 0.5 percent to 4,385.50. Benchmarks in Singapore, Indonesia, New Zealand and India also fell.

China's Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.3 percent to close at 2,033.19, reversing losses earlier in the day. However, the benchmark is still at its lowest point since January 2009.

Chinese stocks are being hurt by a confrontation between China and Japan over disputed islands that have heightened tensions between Asia's two biggest economies.

They're also under pressure as investors worry about what Chinese authorities will do to restart growth amid the country's economic slowdown. Analysts say it's unlikely that Chinese authorities will unveil any major stimulus measures ahead of the National Day holiday next week or an expected but still unscheduled Communist Party meeting to hand over power to a new generation of leaders.

In currency markets, the euro weakened to $1.2902 from $1.2989 in late trading Friday while the dollar fell to 78.02 Japanese yen from 78.15 yen.

U.S. benchmark crude for October delivery was down $1.46 to $91.43 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 47 cents to settle at $92.89 on Friday.

College Football: USC Trojans overpower California Golden Bears

LOS ANGELES -- After a second straight road defeat against a Top-25 opponent, Cal's bowl prospects are virtually gone less than a month into the season.

The Golden Bears were overpowered 27-9 by No. 13 USC in their Pac-12 Conference opener in front of 83,421 fans at the Los Angeles Coliseum on Saturday. Cal has started 1-3 for just the second time in 11 seasons under coach Jeff Tedford.

On the heels of a seven-point defeat at Ohio State, the Bears lost to USC (3-1, 1-1) for the ninth straight time. Cal has been outscored 152-38 the past five games and hasn't beaten the Trojans in Los Angeles since 2000.

Only once in their history have the Bears rallied from a 1-3 start to play in a bowl game. It's a faint silver lining that Cal overcame those odds in 2003 -- Tedford's second season at Berkeley -- and went on to play in the Insight Bowl.

USC dominated with a running attack that produced two 100-yard rushers for the first time in a game since 2008. Penn State transfer Silas Redd ran for 158 yards and Curtis McNeal had 115.

Quarterback Matt Barkley shook off two first-half interceptions to finish with a pair of touchdown passes to Marqise Lee. The second of those, a 3-yarder with 5:56 left, put the game out of reach.

Cal, which totaled 512 yards at Ohio State, had just 250 and did not get into the end zone. Zach Maynard, coming off a sharp performance at Columbus, was sacked six times and finished 18 for 33 for 173 yards with

two interceptions.

Sophomore tailback Brendan Bigelow, who exploded for 160 yards and two long touchdowns a week ago, was expected to play a bigger role in the Cal offense. But he carried just four times for 31 yards -- all in the second half.

Down 17-3 at the half, Cal pulled within eight points in third quarter on field goals of 26 and 35 yards by Vincenzo D'Amato.

The Bears got a break when Josh Hill stripped McNeal and Robert Mullins recovered at the USC 44 with 6:15 left in the period. But the drive ended when Maynard was intercepted on the sidelines by safety T.J. McDonald.

Andre Heidari pushed the margin to 20-9 when he converted a 41-yard field goal with 14:10 left in the game.

USC went ahead 7-0 on a 33-yard touchdown run by Redd with 7:54 left in the first quarter.

Cal answered with a 24-yard field goal by D'Amato, who earlier was wide right from 35 yards after missing all three of hits attempts at Ohio State.

But the Trojans struck back quickly, going 75 yards in six plays, capped by Barkley' 11-yard TD pass to Lee with 7:01 left in the half.

"I have no earthly idea what she'll decide to do," her husband, former President Bill Clinton, said on CBS television's "Face the Nation" on Sunday.

Although Hillary Clinton went down to defeat to President Barack Obama in a close primary contest in 2008, she has stayed in the public eye as the president's top diplomat. In that role, Clinton, who had been a U.S. Senator from New York, has built a reputation as a capable stateswoman and a loyal lieutenant to the president. She is frequently rated as the most popular member of Obama's cabinet.

Clinton has said she will step down from her current job whether the president wins re-election to another four-year term on November 6 or not.

"She wants to take some time off, kind of regroup. Write a book," her husband said.

However, she is likely to remain an influential voice and questions about her political future will persist. Clinton's support among Democrats is firm, and some had hoped Obama would boost his re-election chances by replacing the gaffe-prone Vice President Joseph Biden with her as his No. 2.

While she has remained generally outside the political fray during this election season, her husband has seized a prominent role in campaigning for the president's re-election. Even so, Hillary Clinton, who was first lady when her husband was president from 1993-2001, is herself known as one of the Democratic Party's most influential and best-networked insiders.

The former president said that no matter what, there would be a strong crop of Democrats interested in running for the Oval Office in 2016, including governors and members of Congress.

"We've got a lot of able people in our party who want to be president," he said.

However, he said that with his wife's experience in the White House, where she led an unsuccessful effort to overhaul the U.S. healthcare system, on Capitol Hill, and in the administration, there would be no one more qualified than her to run.

"She's the ablest, I know I'm biased, but I think she demonstrated as senator and as secretary of state that she has extraordinary ability," Clinton said.
