A Freelancers Journey, Part Two | Writing and Speaking Tips ...

Are we there yet?

Are we there yet?

Are we there yet?

Don?t make me turn this career around and go home.

I?ve only started on this journey and already it feels as though I?m ten years old on a trip up the California coast. Impatient for the destination.

What is the destination?

Every writer has the same destination in mind: Fame. Wealth. Validation. Security. Importance.

A side trip to Hollywood/Nobel Peace Prize/New York agents? office would be welcome too.

In a freelance career, you make many side trips.

Sometimes I feel as if this year?s Academy Award-nominated films (which depress me because I?m not nominated or even writer of a film that I could cheerfully say got snubbed) express the freelancer?s journey.

There?s ?Million Dollar Baby,? which echoes what we hope a producer/publisher will say: ?How about a million dollars, baby?? But in the story of a plucky female boxer (with Morgan Freeman and Clint Eastwood in her corner, yowza) who won?t give up and gets no respect (sort of like being published with PublishAmerica or iUniverse), we find a spark of determination.

There?s ?Kinsey,? which wasn?t a best picture nom but perfectily expresses the writer?s obsessive drive as well as the tendency to drive all our loved ones insane.

?The Aviator??ahhh. What freelance writer hasn?t locked themselves in a room with a big screen TV and not shaved for several days? And we all say, ?Don?t tell me we can?t do it. Don?t tell me it can?t be done.?

?Ray??we should all get on our knees and pray for a story like Ray Charles? life. The music is fabulous too, which means you can listen to the soundtrack over and over while writing. Don?t be afraid to set your own freelance standards, your own style, and your own assignments.

?Sideways??it?s the story of a writer who goes to the wine country and has a great affair with a beautiful person. That?s why we?re in this business.

?Finding Neverland.? Don?t forget to play and celebrate the power of the imagination.

While we?re at it, learning from these powerhouse emotional stories, let?s not forget to celebrate our fellow scribes? success. After all, we?ll get there someday.

We may even be there right now.

To be continued?the journey that is. Not the article series. Too many freelance leads!

(AP) ? With the Washington Redskins trailing the Baltimore Ravens by eight late in regulation, Robert Griffin III sprained his right knee at the end of a 13-yard scramble. He left for one play, returned for four but was literally hopping around on the field.

Eventually, he fell to the turf and could no longer continue.

Fellow rookie Kirk Cousins stepped in and finished RG3's work, hitting Pierre Garcon for an 11-yard touchdown pass with 29 seconds remaining and then running in the 2-point conversion. Yet another rookie, Richard Crawford, returned a punt 64 yards in overtime to set up Kai Forbath's 34-yard field goal to give Washington a 31-28 victory.

The Redskins (7-6) won their fourth straight game, putting more pressure on the New York Giants in the race for the NFC East title. The Ravens (9-4) missed an opportunity to clinch an AFC playoff berth and ended a 15-game winning streak following a loss, dropping back-to-back games for the first time since 2009.

Griffin completed 15 of 26 passes for 246 yards with one touchdown and ran seven times for 34 yards. Cousins was a clutch 2 for 2 ? back-to-back to Leonard Hankerson for 15 yards and 11 yards to Garcon for the score after Griffin left the second time.

The Ravens got the ball to start overtime but went three-and-out. Crawford, getting a chance to handle punts for the first time after a disappointing set of games from Brandon Banks, had the big return to Baltimore's 24-yard line, putting the Redskins easily within the range of Forbath, who hasn't missed in 14 attempts in his debut NFL season.

Another major Redskins rookie contributor was Alfred Morris, who ran for 122 yards on 23 carries with a touchdown.

Joe Flacco completed 16 of 21 passes for 182 yards for the Ravens, who took a 28-20 lead on Ray Rice's 7-yard touchdown run with 4:47 to play.

Rice finished with 121 yards on 20 carries, and third-round pick Pierce had a season-high 53 yards. Anquan Boldin, who passed the 10,000-yard receiving mark, caught two touchdown passes and set up a third with a 28-yard catch-and-tiptoe-run down the sideline.

Griffin was coming off quite a week ? including a Monday night win over the Giants and a donation of his jersey and cleats to the Hall of Fame for breaking the NFL single-season record for rushing yards by a rookie quarterback ? but both he and Flacco struggled after halftime as both defenses buckled down after a breakneck first half.

After 15 minutes of play, Washington already had 186 yards ? the most by any NFL team in the first quarter this season and the most by the franchise since 1997. The Ravens led 21-14 at halftime, but a pair of turnovers by Flacco were converted into field goals to pull the Redskins within one.

New stunning nighttime views of Earth unveiled

In this image provided by NASA, the United States of America is seen at night from a composite assembled from data acquired by the Suomi NPP satellite in April and October 2012. The image was made possible by the new satellite?s ?day-night band? of the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), which detects light in a range of wavelengths from green to near-infrared and uses filtering techniques to observe dim signals such as city lights, gas flares, auroras, wildfires, and reflected moonlight. In this image from Oct. 13, 2012 provided by NASA, the Nile River valley and delta is seen at night from a composite assembled from data acquired by the Suomi NPP satellite. The Nile River Valley and Delta comprise less than 5 percent of Egypt?s land area, but provide a home to roughly 97 percent of the country?s population. Nothing makes the location of human population clearer than the lights illuminating the valley and delta at night. The city lights resemble a giant calla lily, just one with a kink in its stem near the city of Luxor. Some of the brightest lights occur around Cairo, but lights are abundant along the length of the river. Bright city lights also occur along the Suez Canal and around Tel Aviv. Away from the lights, however, land and water appear uniformly black. This image was acquired near the time of the new Moon, and little moonlight was available to brighten land and water surfaces. (AP Photo/NASA)

In this image from Sept. 24, 2012 provided by NASA, the Korean Peninsula is seen at night from a composite assembled from data acquired by the Suomi NPP satellite. City lights at night are a fairly reliable indicator of where people live. But this isn?t always the case, and the Korean Peninsula shows why. As of July 2012, South Korea?s population was estimated at roughly 49 million people, and North Korea?s population was estimated at about half that number. But where South Korea is gleaming with city lights, North Korea has hardly any lights at all, just a faint glimmer around Pyongyang. The wide-area image shows the Korean Peninsula, parts of China and Japan, the Yellow Sea, and the Sea of Japan. The white inset box encloses an area showing ship lights in the Yellow Sea. Many of the ships form a line, as if assembling along a watery border. (AP Photo/NASA)

A 1/20 scale model of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration-National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership satellite, which was launched last year, is seen Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, at the American Geophysical Union meeting in San Francisco. A new sensor aboard this satellite is enabling scientists to observe Earth's atmosphere and surface during nighttime hours, in greater detail than ever before. (AP Photo/Ben Margot)

This image provided by NASA shows the eastern seaboard of the United States of America at night from a composite assembled from data acquired by the Suomi NPP satellite as Hurricane Sandy came ashore on Oct. 30, 2012. The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi NPP satellite acquired this image of hurricane Sandy at 3:35 a.m. EDT. This image is from the ?day-night band? on VIIRS, which detects light wavelengths from green to near-infrared. The full Moon, which exacerbated the height of the storm water surge, lit the tops of the clouds. Sandy?s clouds stretched from the Atlantic Ocean to Chicago. Clusters of lights gave away the locations of some cities throughout the region; but along the East Coast, clouds obscured the lights, many of which were blacked out due to the storm. Several million customers over multiple states were without electricity. (AP Photo/NASA)

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Twinkling city lights, raging wildfires and colorful auroras are lit up in new dazzling nighttime views of the Earth.

The new images released Wednesday are courtesy of a newly launched NASA-NOAA satellite that's equipped with a sensor to observe the planet at night.

There's the Nile River bathed in city lights. A map of the United States shows the populated East Coast illuminated. Light from fishing boats can be pinpointed.

The satellite also captured the glow from natural sources including moonlight, northern lights and naturally-occurring fires.

After Superstorm Sandy made landfall in late October, hard-hit New Jersey, lower Manhattan and the Rockaways appeared dark in the satellite images compared with surrounding areas ? the result of widespread power outages.

Australian Radio Hosts Delete Twitter Accounts, Face Calls To Resign Following Kate Middleton Prank

With today?s tragic news that the nurse who answered the prank call made to the hospital where Kate Middleton was being treated apparently committed suicide, comes a wave of backlash directed at the two Australian radio presenters who made the call. Unsurprisingly, much of the response ? particularly online ? has placed blame on the hosts, calling for their resignation.

RELATED: Nurse Who Answered Kate Middleton Prank Call Found Dead In Suspected Suicide

Jacintha Saldanha, a nurse at the hospital, was found dead two days after she answered a prank call from Mel Greig and Michael Christian, who were impersonating the Queen and Prince Charles. Unwittingly, she passed the call along to another nurse who divulged details about the Duchess? condition.

Below is a sampling of the outrage and anger directed toward the hosts on Twitter:

There?s also a petition, calling for 2Day FM radio to ?dismiss Mel Greig, Michael Christian and all those involved for gross misconduct.? Journalists ?should be held to higher standards,? it says.

Neither Greig nor Christian have made a public statement ? and both of their Twitter accounts (@MelGreigHot30 and @MContheradio) have been deleted. TMZ reported that they have been ?ordered? not to speak to the media.

UPDATE: The radio station released the following statement:

Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) and 2Day FM are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the death of nurse Jacintha Saldanha from King Edward VII?s Hospital and we extend our deepest sympathies to her family and all that have been affected by this situation around the world.

Chief Executive Officer Rhys Holleran has spoken with the presenters, they are both deeply shocked and at this time we have agreed that they not comment about the circumstances. SCA and the hosts have decided that they will not return to their radio show until further notice out of respect for what can only be described as a tragedy.
