(AP) ? She was one of the better kept secrets of Sweden's royal household: a commoner and divorcee whose relationship with Prince Bertil was seen as a threat to the Bernadotte dynasty.

In a touching royal romance, Welsh-born Princess Lilian and her Bertil kept their love unofficial for decades and were both in their 60s when they finally received the king's blessing to get married.

Lilian died in her Stockholm home on Sunday at age 97. The Royal Palace didn't give a cause of death, but Lilian suffered from Alzheimer's disease and had been in poor health for several years.

She met Sweden's Prince Bertil in 1943, but his obligations to the throne and Lilian's status as a divorced commoner prevented them from making their love public. The couple's sacrifices and lifelong dedication to one another gripped the hearts of Swedes.

"If I were to sum up my life, everything has been about my love," the witty, petite princess said of her husband when she turned 80 in 1995. "He's a great man, and I love him."

Born Lilian Davies in Swansea, Wales, on Aug. 30, 1915, she moved to London at 16 to embark on a career as a model and an actress, showcasing hats and gloves in commercials and taking on small roles in movies. She met British actor Ivan Craig, whom she married in 1940.

After World War II broke out, Craig was drafted into the British army while Lilian stayed behind in London, working at a factory making radio sets for the British merchant fleet and serving at a hospital for wounded soldiers.

At the time, Prince Bertil was stationed at the Swedish Embassy in the British capital as a naval attache. The couple first laid eyes on each other in the fancy nightclub Les Ambassadeurs shortly before Lilian's 28th birthday in 1943. Lilian then invited him to a cocktail party in her London apartment. But it wasn't until he fetched her with his car following an air raid in her neighborhood that the romance blossomed, Lilian recalled in her 2000 memoirs, "My Life with Prince Bertil."

"He was so handsome my prince. Especially in uniform. So charming and thoughtful. And so funny. Oh how we laughed together," Lilian wrote.

Lilian was still married at the time, but the situation resolved itself since Craig, too, had met someone else during his years abroad in the army, and the couple divorced on amicable terms.

Upon Bertil's return to Sweden, however, his relationship with a commoner became a delicate issue.

Bertil became a possible heir to the throne when his eldest brother died in a plane crash, leaving behind an infant son ? the current King Carl XVI Gustaf. Two other brothers had dropped out of the line of succession by marrying commoners.

Bertil's father, King Gustaf VI Adolf, ordered him to abstain from marrying Lilian, since that would jeopardize the survival of the Bernadotte dynasty.

Instead, the couple let their romance flourish in an unofficial manner, living together in a common-law marriage for decades.

They first lived in their house in Sainte-Maxime in France, but later shared their time between the French village and Stockholm, where Lilian discreetly stayed in the background for years.

Despite the royal reluctance to recognize her officially, Lilian's charm and warm personality soon won the Swedes over, and magazines depicted the happy couple playing golf and riding around on the prince's motorbike. When Prince Bertil had to use a walking frame after an operation, she cheerfully nicknamed it his "Bugatti."

In 1976, some 33 years after they first met, the new king finally gave them the approval they had been waiting for.

On a cold December day the same year, Lilian, or "Lily" as the prince used to call her, became princess of Sweden and duchess of the southern province of Halland in a ceremony at the Drottningholm Palace Chapel just outside Stockholm. The bride had by then turned 61 and the groom was 64.

The couple never had any children.

Prince Bertil died in the couple's residence Villa Solbacken in Stockholm in 1997 after unspecified lung problems.

Lilian took over some of her husband's duties, especially as an award presenter for various sports associations.

Health problems forced her to cut back on some of her royal duties. In 2006 she stopped attending the annual Nobel Prize banquet, and the next year she also stopped taking part in the award ceremony.

In 2010, the palace said Lilian suffered from Alzheimer's disease, preventing her from attending the wedding that summer of Crown Princess Victoria and Daniel Westling.

Why rats sniff each other

Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine

Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine

By Megan Gannon, LiveScience

Without being able to talk to each other, rats use sniffing as one way to answer key questions about strangers. Is that a female? Can I mate with her? Is this one sick? What did he eat? ? All of this information can be learned through odor cues.?

But new research shows that the act of sniffing itself might serve its own social function, allowing rats to reaffirm their hierarchical status and maintain order.?

Daniel Wesson, a neuroscientist at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, studied how pairs of rats sniffed each other when they were placed in the same enclosure. In initial observations, Wesson saw that when one rat started sniffing another's body or behind, both rats ramped up their level of sniffing. But when one rat started sniffing the other's face, the other rat typically backed off and turned down its level of sniffing.?

Further investigations showed that?dominant rats?(larger, more aggressive ones) didn't tamp down their sniffing, and sometimes increased it, when a subordinate rat sniffed them in the face. But when dominant rats started smelling their subordinates head on, and the subordinates failed to cut back on their sniffing, the top rats were quick to engage in aggressive behavior (kicking, biting or jumping on the other rat). The results suggest that sniffing can help high-ranking rats assert dominance and allow subordinate rats to appease their superiors and prevent?aggression.?

Wesson saw the same results when he inhibited the rats'?sense of smell, which bolsters his claim that there's more to sniffing than odor-detection. And when he gave some of the rats oxytocin, a brain chemical that's been shown to enhance bonding and ease the pressure of hierarchies, these sniffing displays and aggression vanished. [That's Odd! The 10 Weirdest Animal Discoveries]?

It's still not clear why only face-sniffing seems to serve a social function for rats, while body-sniffing and butt-sniffing don't. Wesson said one possibility could have to do with the fact that face-to-face interactions are very dangerous for a rat, as an injury to the throat or neck could be deadly.?

"When animals come face-to-face with each other, they more or less have to be on their best behavior, otherwise they risk getting hurt," Wesson told LiveScience. "Another possibility is that there are cues given off during sniffing that can only be communicated when animals are in proximity with each other."?

Wesson said he hopes to explore the circuits in the brain that are activated when animals are engaged in this behavior, and to learn more about why animals decide to become aggressive, as well as which brain problems might cause animals to inappropriately deal with social cues.?

The research was detailed in the journal Current Biology.?

Sony Electronic Viewfinder for Cyber-shot RX1 (FDA-EV1MK)

By Jim Fisher

The Sony Electronic Viewfinder for Cyber-shot RX1 ($449.99 direct) is an add-on viewfinder for Sony's full-frame compact camera, the Cyber-shot DSC-RX1. It slides into the camera's multi-accessory hot shoe and gives you an eye-level look at what would typically be fed to the RX1's rear LCD.

The finder is identical in size and design to the similar FDAEV1S Electronic Viewfinder for select Sony NEX cameras. It shares the same 2.4-megapixel OLED design with that finder as well as the EVFs that are built into Sony's top-end interchangeable lens cameras like the Alpha 99 and NEX-6. The EVF is hinged, so it can tilt straight up to 90 degrees, but it isn't possible to lock it at any position.

Photographers who prefer to put their eyes up to the camera, and those who expect to use the RX1 on the brightest of days, will appreciate the clarity the EVF provides. It's smaller and comprises more pixels than the camera's rear LCD. This results in an image that is fantastically clear, which is especially helpful when focusing manually. You can set the camera to manually switch between the LCD and EVF via the Finder/LCD button on the left side of the eyepiece, or set the change occur automatically via an eye-sensor. Sony includes two eyepieces?one with a larger flexible rubber eyecup and one with a smaller ridged plastic eyecup.

The Electronic Viewfinder is one of two external finder options that Sony offers for the RX1. The other, a fixed optical finder, doesn't show you what your focus or depth of field will be?it simply provides approximate framing. The optical finder is priced even higher, at $600, but you can get away with using any shoe-mount optical finder that matches the field of view of a 35mm lens. Many of these are available used for very little money, as they were a popular accessory with vintage rangefinder cameras.

The OLED EVF is a more modern take on this concept, offering completely accurate framing, real-time preview of your depth of field and exposure, and the automatic magnification as a focus aid when manual focus is enabled. It's expensive, but so is the RX1?if you're going to spend $2,800 on the camera, you should budget the extra $450 for the EVF as it greatly enhances the shooting experience. Being able to bring up the camera to your eye is a welcome feeling for experienced photographers, and if you're shooting on a bright day it will eliminate the glare that sometimes makes using a rear LCD a difficult proposition. It would be nice if you were able to lock it in the 0, 45-, and 90-degree positions, and it would be nice if it was less expensive; but you can't argue with the clarity that the high-resolution OLED display provides.

Rover Curiosity may resume operation on Mars soon

NASA said that its Mars rover Curiosity, which halted its exploration on the Red Planet last Thursday due to a memory malfunction, might get back to work this weekend.

NASA's Mars rover Curiosity is on the road to recovery from last week's computer glitch and could be back in action as early as this weekend, mission officials say.

Curiosity went into a protective, minimal-activity "safe mode" last Thursday (Feb. 28) when its handlers swapped the rover over to its backup computer. They made this switch after noticing a problem with the flash memory on Curiosity's primary "A-side" computer.

But the rover's respite may be short-lived. Curiosity came out of safe mode Saturday (March 2) and began using its high-gain antenna again a day later, so the 1-ton robot may soon resume its quest to determine if?Mars?has ever been able to support microbial life.

"We're out of safe mode and are back with an operable high-gain antenna, which is one of the big steps in the recovery," said Curiosity project manager Richard Cook, of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. [Curiosity Rover's Latest Amazing Mars Photos]

Cook cautioned, however, that much work remains to be done. Engineers are still configuring the rover's backup "B-side" computer for surface operations, an activity that should take another few days.

And the Curiosity team still isn't sure what caused the A-side glitch in the first place. They hope to turn the A-side computer on again Wednesday (March 6) or so to take a look, Cook said.

"We really can't tell [the cause of the problem] without turning it on and trying to read the memory locations that look like they were corrupted," Cook told SPACE.com.

One possible cause is an impact by a high-energy charged particle called a cosmic ray. Curiosity's gear is radiation-tolerant, but that doesn't mean it's impervious to all such damage.

"We certainly have seen similar types of behavior in other pieces of memory on other missions as well as MSL," Cook said, referencing the official name of the?Curiosity rover's $2.5 billion mission, the Mars Science Laboratory.

Cosmic-ray damage is usually transient, he added, so the problem on the A-side may disappear when the computer is cycled back on. Even if the glitch is more permanent, the rover team can probably still "map around it" and bring the A-side back up, giving Curiosity two functional computer systems once again.

"The prospects are very good," Cook said.

If the memory problem on the A-side is not a serious one, Curiosity could resume science operations as soon as this weekend, or perhaps early next week, he added. If the issue is more substantial, the team will have to devise a workaround and reconnoiter after that.

Curiosity landed inside Mars' huge Gale Crater last August, kicking off a two-year surface mission to investigate the habitability of the area. It's already found many signs of past exposure to liquid water, including an ancient streambed. The car-size rover is the most complex and capable robotic explorer ever sent to another world, NASA officials say.

Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. pleased with interest in Ottawa ...

Report an error

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. won?t say how many groups applied to pre-qualify for the Ottawa-area casino tender.

The agency, however, says it?s pleased with the level of interest.

Thursday brought the deadline for the request for pre-qualification in the contract competition.

The OLG will now sift through the submissions and decide which groups can compete for the tender in a request for proposal process.

The agency says it can?t disclose the number of submissions because it?s commercially sensitive information.

Between three and five bidders are expected to be invited for the contract competition. The OLG believes it will have an operator chosen by the end of the year.

The call for pre-qualified bidders went out last November.

The OLG and City Hall must both support the location where a developer wants to build a new casino.

If a winning operator emerges from the process, it stands to make $30 million minimum each year to run a casino with up to 600 seats and 2,000 slots.

A formula established by the OLG also allows the operator to collect money above a revenue threshold and collect money from VIP players from outside Canada. Non-gaming revenues go right into the operator?s pocket.

The OLG is giving applicants the choice of running a new casino at the Rideau Carleton Raceway ? where the agency already has slots ? or move the operation somewhere else in the zone, which covers most of Ottawa and Rockland.

'Should I choose Android or iOS?' The truth may surprise you

I'm on the road today, but I have time to answer a question that's been hitting my Hardware 2.0 inbox with increasing regularity lately.

Should I got an for Android or iOS smartphone/tablet?

OK, this is the old "Windows or Mac?" or "Windows or Linux?" argument, only with different players. However, while I've had some pretty strong views on the differences between Windows, Mac, and Linux, I'm a lot more chilled out when it comes to the differences between the two mobile operating systems duking it out for supremacy.

So which is best?

Short answer: It doesn't matter.

Slightly longer answer: OK, there are times when it matters.

OK, I bet you now want the long answer, right? OK, here it is. Which you choose basically comes down to one thing?whether you are tied to an ecosystem already.

If you currently don't own either an Android or iOS smartphone or tablet, then you're a blank slate, you're not tied to either ecosystem, and whichever path you take is ultimately dictated by your personal preferences. I suggest you ask people for their thoughts, go handle some devices, and make your choice from there.

As far as the platforms go, each has individual strengths and weaknesses, but overall there's little to separate the two. I come from an iOS background, but the other day I took delivery of a new Nexus 7, and within a few hours I had it set up ready to do some real work, and I was amazed how similar to my iPad it looked and felt.

What about usability? Again, there's not much to separate the platforms. If you are willing to spend some time exploring your platform of choice, then you should be fine whichever you pick. Neither are particularly hard to grasp, although I personally think that iOS is a little easier to get going with at the start.

If you're already an iTunes user?especially if you have a lot of music or other media?or you're heavily invested in Google services, then this may sway you in one direction or another, but only you know how important this is to you. It may be a huge factor for you, or you may decide to leave your iTunes stuff behind, or decide that complete Google integration is not all that important to you.

However, if you are more heavily invested in either ecosystem?maybe you already own an iPhone or an Android tablet?then ideally I recommend sticking with what you already have. You should already be familiar with the platform, and chances are that you're already bought apps, which you'll be able to transfer to your new device as long as you stick with the same platform.

You can, however, do what I did and buy into both iOS and Android. There's nothing wrong with a bit of tech diversity; in fact, I think that it is good for the mind. But be aware of the following:

  • You will probably end up paying for apps you've already bought on the other platform, and those $0.99 payments add up!
  • You will get confused?probably frustrated?when switching between the platforms, at least initially.
  • The discrepancies in features between the platforms will annoy you. For example, I really wish that I could get SwiftKey on iOS because it is a massive productivity booster.
  • Another thing that will annoy?and possibly confuse you?is the differences?sometimes subtle, sometimes not?between the same app on the different platforms. For example, I use SplashID for passwords on iOS and Android, but the latter version has fewer features.

But in the end, it's your money. Whatever you end up choosing, I'm sure that you'll enjoy the platform, and that after the initial learning curve you'll have no trouble getting your smartphone or tablet to do what you want it to do.

Have fun!
