Feeling Guilty? Iyanla Vanzant Says It's A 'Wasted Emotion' (VIDEO)

Feeling guilty about something you did or said to someone? You're wasting your time, says relationship expert Iyanla Vanzant.

In an episode of "Oprah's Lifeclass," Iyanla explains why guilt "doesn't serve anything but the ego" and discusses how it differs from shame.

"I say they're cousins, kissing cousins," Iyanla tells Oprah about the two emotions. "Shame says there's something wrong with who I am. It's intrinsic... Guilt says there's something wrong with what I've done."

In this video, Iyanla lays out the three reasons people feel guilty. Plus, she offers a simple remedy to help you move past what she considers to be a wasted emotion:

"Acknowledge [what you've done]. Ask for forgiveness of yourself first and then of others if you can. Then, if you can do something to make amends, that will release you from the karmic tie to that action."
